Redux Contemporary Art Center produces 8 exhibitions per year in our two gallery spaces. A diverse range of risk-taking exhibitions are produced each year covering a wide range of topics through solo, two-person and group exhibitions. Often Redux operates as a project space inviting artists to produce original works on site through varying lengths of residency, while engaging and interacting with our local community though special classes and artist talks. All of our exhibitions are free and open to the public.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS Oct 23rd 2010

Redux is the premier contemporary art venue in South Carolina offering opportunities for emerging and established artists to exhibit in historic downtown Charleston, SC. Exhibitions are not limited to any media, and all applicants will be considered for solo, group, and two person exhibitions and residencies in 2011.

Redux currently presents six to eight exhibitions each year, featuring work by internationally renowned and local, emerging and mid-career artists. We shoot for diversity in style, media and subject matter when planning our season.

Thanks to the generosity of the Andy Warhol Foundation, this year, three artists will be awarded an honorarium up to $2,000. This honorarium is to help artists offset installation and travel costs. Additionally, Redux will publish an exhibition catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is the exhibition that I am applying for?

A: All applicants will be considered for solo, group, two person exhibitions and residencies in 2011.

Q: How long is the exhibition if I am accepted?

A:  Exhibitions at Redux vary in length from 3 weeks to 8 weeks in duration.

Q: Who will review my application?

A: Redux selects a panel of 3-5 artists, curators, art critics and writers to review the applications.

Q: Can I submit older artwork in my application that has already sold?

A: Yes. Redux chooses artists based on the work they submit but does not expect that the exhibition they have at Redux will be of the exact work submitted, although the exhibition can be of the work submitted. If selected for an exhibition, Redux will work with each artist individually. Redux is meant to be an experimental exhibition space that gives artists complete freedom and control over their project(s). It's a great opportunity for artists to get away from gallery constraints and develop a dream project that they may not be able to complete in other exhibition spaces.

Q: If I am submitting video work, how long should my video be?

A: Please keep video submissions under 3min. You may include longer videos, but the jury panel will only review the 3min video submission.

Q: Can I submit more than 15 images?

A: You can submit more than 15 images, but the jurors will only review the first 15 submitted images.

Q: Can I submit a detail?  Will that count as one of my 5-15 entries?

A: Yes. You may submit a detail of your work, however it will count as one of your 5-15 images.

Q: Can I send slides?

A: Yes. Artists may submit their work in slide, CD, DVD, or video format. (both mac and pc formatted discs accepted - please send still images at a minimum of 1000 pixels wide at 72 dpi and in JPEG format)

Q: How many artists will be chosen for an exhibition at Redux?

A: The quantity of artists chosen for exhibitions in 2011 depends on the quality of work submitted. Redux Contemporary Art Center produces at least 8 exhibitions per year in our two gallery spaces. A diverse range of risk-taking exhibitions are produced each year covering a wide range of topics through solo, two-person and group exhibitions. Please review our archived exhibitions to view past awarded artists.

Q: Does my resume effect the juror’s decision to choose my work for an exhibition?

A: No. We use a “blind” jurying process which means that the only materials presented to the juror are images, media and dimensions of your work, accompanied by the reference number that you are assigned. The juror will have no knowledge of your name, gender, age, level of education or any other personal information.

Q: What style of work does Redux usually look for?

A: The jurors are given strict instructions to consider all of the work that has been submitted, regardless of any personal preferences that they may have. Our goal is to attract accomplished artists and to provide these artists with the opportunity to create work freely with total control of their project(s), while engaging our community. We want Charleston and the Southeast to experience first-hand the complex artistic processes behind some of today’s most intriguing and thought-provoking art. Redux will continue to bring exciting new work to the Southeast and showcase a quality of work that is comparable to that seen in larger cities across the United States.

Q: Do I need to have a BFA or MFA to apply for an exhibition?

A: No. While many featured artists do have some form of academic training, there is absolutely no educational requirement for being considered for an exhibition at Redux. Because of our “blind” jurying process, the juror will not know your background.

Q: Other than the entry fee, are there any additional fees if I am chosen for a solo, group or two-person exhibition?

A: Artists are responsible for shipment of their artwork to and from the Redux Facility. Promotion of Exhibitions will be paid for by Redux, which may include postcards, posters, and other such material. Opening Reception costs will also be paid for by Redux. The Artist must provide any necessary insurance for the artwork shown in Redux. All artwork will remain uninsured unless insured by the Artist.

Q: How often can I apply for an exhibition or residency?

A: You may apply once every year.

Q: Do I need gallery representation to enter?

A: No.  You may enter the competition regardless of whether you have representation.

Q: How long does it take to get a response and how will I be notified?

A: Artists will be notified of results by mail on or before December 15th 2011. Selected artists will be notified by phone; artists who are not selected will be notified by mail with the return of their slides.

Q: Does Redux take a commission if I sell any work?

A: No. Redux does not take any commission on any artwork sold within the Redux gallery. However, Redux does request that the artist donate a percentage of every sale to the non-profit programs of Redux. This donated percentage is left up to the discretion of the artist but is recommend to be a minimum of 20%.

Q: How do artists benefit from having an exhibition at Redux?

A: An exhibition at Redux is a great opportunity for artists to get away from gallery constraints and develop a dream project that they may not be able to complete in other exhibition spaces. The results of having an exhibition at Redux differ for every artist, but most report a significant amount of contact as a direct result of their exhibition.  For some artists, having an exhibition at Redux results in sales, for others it results in new gallery representation or the inclusion of work in other galleries. As our organization grows, the possibilities for artists increase exponentially.

Q: How many pieces will I need to make if I’m invited to Redux to complete a residency or site-specific exhibition?

A: Artists that are chosen for a residency or to create works on site, must complete enough work to fill the galleries. Redux recognizes that artists create work at varying speeds and if chosen, Redux will work with each artist’s individual needs. Artists chosen for a residency or site-specific exhibition are encouraged to complete work in their studio prior to the exhibition if the residency does not allow for enough time to fill the gallery.
